Many dental care experts agree that education can be one of the most important factors in putting children on a path towards a lifetime of good dental health, but many children who do not have access to a dentist don't have the opportunity to learn healthy habits.
However, students at Department of Defense elementary schools, which are for children whose parents are in the military, recently received new materials to help learn about oral health issues.
Dental insurer United Concordia recently distributed flipbooks and DVDs to these schools that the company's president, Lawrence McKinley, said would greatly improve the dental health of children.
"It's heartbreaking to see a child's smile destroyed by severe tooth decay or to see a child who is not able to eat, sleep or pay attention in school due to a mouth full of toothaches," he said. "That's why we feel this outreach is so important. It affords children the opportunity to learn the importance of a healthy mouth before problems arise."
Among children between the ages of 6 and 19, 22.9 percent have some form of untreated dental decay, according to government statistics.
