Even ancient Egyptians understood the importance of dental health

Even ancient Egyptians understood the importance of dental health Recently, researchers from The University of Western Ontario examined the mummified body of a man who died 2,100 years ago, and discovered that tooth decay may have contributed to his death. The man's teeth were in horrible condition, and even to the point that his dental infections may have been so bad that they may have played a role in his demise.

However, there were also signs that he had visited a dentist. His largest cavity had linens soaked with fig juice stuffed in it, likely by a dental health professional. According to the scientists, records indicate that the field of dentistry is just as old as the great pyramids.

Thankfully, dental health has come a long way since then, and there are now many ways to avoid tooth decay. However, that doesn't mean that dental infections are any less serious and dangerous. According to the Mayo Clinic, research suggests that if bacteria in the mouth is left unchecked, it may be able to cross into the bloodstream and affect the rest of the body. This is why it's important to regularly visit the dentist, and practice proper oral care habits.
