Dentist offers tips for caring for a baby's teeth

Next, she said that once teeth grow in a brushing routine should begin, followed by flossing once teeth begin to touch one another.

New parents often worry about every aspect of their baby's health and yet still somehow forget about oral care. Many parents do not realize that they need to begin caring for their children's teeth at birth, often waiting until their little one is 2 or even 3 years old before taking them for their first dental check-up. Recently, a Minnesota dentist offered some suggestions for people who are concerned about the dental health of their baby.

Trudy Bonvino, DDS  said that dental care should begin before a child even has their first teeth. This means wiping their gums with a soft washcloth after every meal and using a toothbrush specially designed for babies, with water only, no toothpaste.

Next, she said that once teeth grow in a brushing routine should begin, followed by flossing once teeth begin to touch one another.

"This is an important step, because once the teeth are touching each other, food particles can become lodged between them, which can promote the growth of bacteria and development of plaque," said Bonvino.

Finally, be sure to take children to the dentist as soon as their first teeth come in, so they can start their journey of a lifetime of proper oral health
