Christmas, Hanukkah and even Valentine’s Day are all holidays that can revolve around foods that are dangerous to teeth. It's almost impossible to avoid all of the treats that are a part of the traditional holiday meal, and what would a festive dinner be without a nice piece of cake or pie at the end of it? Georgia news source the Savannah Morning News recently spoke to dentist Angela Canfield who offered some tips for keeping teeth healthy during this season.
First, the dental health expert pointed out that it's not the amount of sugar a person eats that is the problem, it's the amount of time that sugar stays on their teeth that causes issues.
"When bacteria comes in contact with sugar or starch in the mouth, it produces acid that attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more. Continued attacks can cause the enamel on the teeth to break down, eventually leading to tooth decay," said Canfield, quoted by the news source.
This suggests that the sooner a person can brush their teeth after eating sweets, the better. Canfield added people can avoid a lot of teeth-damaging substances by not drinking soft drinks, which can contain about 10-12 teaspoons of sugar per serving.
Michigan's ABC News affiliate spoke to a local dentist who reminded people that caramels, taffy and other sticky snacks may not only lead to cavities, but could also loosen crowns or fillings.
