Dental expert answers questions on trends in children's oral health
Updated: 7/1/2011 6:59:53 PM

Water is the best option to put in baby bottles in between feedings In a recent article published by the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Rhea Haugseth, who was elected President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, answered several questions on how children's dental health is changing.

The expert told the news source that one of the most common problems pediatric dentists have to address is babies who are given sippy cups full of sugary beverages. She said that many parents don't realize that giving their offspring bottles full of milk or juice creates a 20-minute window for acid produced by sugar to attack the teeth.

Haugseth recommended that parents give their toddlers bottles with only water if they need to use them in order to sooth the children.

Although there have been fewer cases of tooth decay among children between the ages of 6 and 12, as much as 50 percent of patients between 2 and 5 have the oral condition, Haugseth said.

According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a total of 23 percent of U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 11 have untreated dental caries.
