New laws that will come into effect on September 22, 2012 call for all cigarette packages to feature graphic images of the potential health risks of smoking, including oral cancer, according to a recent article published by the American Dental Association (ADA).
One of the nine images chosen by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used on the labels is a mouth with rotted teeth and a cancerous lesion on the lip, the organization reported.
In addition to the packaging regulations, the FDA has also enlisted the help of the ADA in spreading the word about the dangers associated with other types of tobacco products.
"As a matter of public health, we have become increasingly alarmed by recent attempts to market smokeless tobacco as a healthier (or less harmful) alternative to cigarettes," said members of the ADA.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, one American dies each hour from the disease. One of the reasons why oral cancer is so deadly is that it is usually not detected early enough for individuals to undergo successful treatment.
However, dentists can detect signs of the disease during routine dental checkups.
