Dentists warn against 'bleachorexia'
Updated: 6/10/2011 6:59:54 PM

At-home whitening products should only be used once a month While some people think that using store-bought teeth whitening products is a safe way to quickly improve the appearance of their smile, these individuals may want to consult a dentist before they start bleaching more frequently than they brush.

According to a recent article published by ABC News, some consumers are neglecting to follow the instructions on at-home teeth whitening products, which indicate that they should not be used more than once per month. Dentists are now referring to these individuals as "bleachorexic."

"The media has done a good job of making whitening sound innocuous, but it's not," said Dr. Ira Handschuh, a dentist from White Plains, NY, quoted by the news provider.

He explained that the overuse of at-home whitening products can eventually cause gums to recede and teeth to become brittle.

People who over-bleach to achieve optimal results may consider seeking in-office laser treatments provided by qualified dentists, which have been shown to be more effective than at-home treatments.

According to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the majority of respondents said that whiter teeth are the thing they want most to improve their smile.
