Tooth decay is the most common chronic condition among children and adolescents between 6 and 19 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now, dental professionals in some areas are visiting schools to estimate how many children have this problem.
West Virginia Public Broadcasting reports that dental hygienists from the Mid Ohio Valley Health Department, the state Department of Health and Human Services and West Virginia University recently began visiting elementary schools.
The professionals intend to examine 1,000 children in total to see how many school-age individuals in the state of West West Virginia suffer from tooth decay. The hygienists will note which oral problems, if any, have gone untreated among the students.
The dental hygienists who are involved hope that this data will lead to and encourage better dental health among children in the future.
Parents whose children are in need of dental care will find there are low-cost ways of treatment. Discount dental plans provide affordable coverage for these individuals and their families.
