Dental hygiene awareness program receives funding from grants The most common disease among children age 6 to 11 is tooth decay, according to the Center for Disease Control. Foundations are donating money to provide dental care for those who may need it.

The News Review reports that two clinics in Oregon have been awarded $200,000 in grants. The Mercy Foundation and the Umpqua Community Health Center (UCHC) were given the funds by the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF). The groups will focus on providing more children dental care.

For UCHC, the money will also go toward a prevention program in which a trailer filled with dental equipment will make its way toward several schools to make dental service more accessible for children. Those between the ages of 6 and 12 will also be able to participate in screenings and fluoride treatments.

Linda Mullins, chief executive officer at UCHC, told the paper that the program will not only teach young children about the importance of good dental health, but it will also "give them the tools to do this themselves."

Families with children who may need to practice better oral hygiene can find low cost dental care services. Discount dental plans provide affordable dental care for individuals and families.
