Maine extends dental insurance to more children
Updated: 6/2/2010 5:00:15 PM

Maine extends dental insurance to more children In an effort to improve the dental care of children, lawmakers in Maine recently passed legislation that will help parents of young children access dental insurance for their children.

The law would allow parents to include their children on their own dental insurance plans. Currently, many insurance providers in the state exclude children under the age of four from policies.

"By this age, children can have significant tooth decay that could be avoided by seeing a dentist as soon as their first teeth appear."

Alfond added that the bill would help stem the rise in tooth decay among children, as cavities are more effectively treated when they are caught early.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends taking children to see a dentist as soon as their first tooth appears.
