Individuals who aren't seeing a dentist regularly are at risk for a wide range of dental health problems, but for many, dental insurance is just not affordable.
For this reason, grants from both public and private institutions to community health centers that provide access to dental procedures foundations have become so important.
The Ravenswood Community Health Center in Paolo Alto, California, recently received a $1.5 million grant from the David and Lucie Packard Foundation to help get a dental clinic started.
The clinic, set to open next Thursday, has 10 chairs for treating children and adults who lack dental insurance. Patients will pay for procedures on a sliding scale based on their income.
Clinic CEO, Luisa Buada, told the San Jose Mercury news that the dental clinic would help expand access in to dental care in the area.
"There's plenty of dentists, but someone would have to pay full-fee or they would have to have insurance," she told the news source. "The dental accessibility is so horrible that it's like the frontier for our population because of their lack of dental coverage and low income."
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that 47 percent of American adults between 18 and 64 years old did not see a dentist in the past year.
