New initiative to support Maryland's dental health
Updated: 9/11/2009 3:00:23 PM

New initiative to support Maryland After a 12-year-old boy passed away from a treatable oral health disease, Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley decided to implement a statewide dental health plan to raise awareness of this issue, The Washington Post recently reported.

While it is a grim story, this serves as a reminder to us all that regular dental checkups can help catch and examine dental health problems before they become dangerous.

On a lighter note, the Governor recently appeared at a free dental screening for elementary school kids and spoke about new programs that have helped kids prevent cavities and other conditions.

The Centers for Disease Control released figures that indicated around 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental health problems in children, making it doubly important to find a local dentist that can best suit your needs and budget.

As a result, the "Healthy Smiles" program will help Maryland's dental heath by reminding families how important it is to care for their teeth, as the Baltimore Sun reported.

Dental checkups need not be a chore - some dentists offices reward repeat visitors with tokens which can then be exchanged for treats like small toys and arcade games, RDH Magazine revealed.
