A program was launched through a partnership between a medical center and a community college in an effort to distribute dental care packets to the children of Maui.
The packets, which are provided by the Maui Memorial Medical Center, contained a toothbrush for children and a sample teeth cleaning wipe for infants, the Maui News reports. Last week, approximately 200 packets were distributed.
Joyce Yamada, coordinator of the MCC Dental Assisting Program at the center, told the news provider another aspect of the program was an effort to encourage dental assistant students to participate in service projects in their local community.
"By sharing their knowledge, they get experience in working with others," Yamada said.
The packets also give parents advice about how to avoid baby tooth decay, which includes suggestions such as wiping their child's mouth with the provided cloth. It has also been reported that allowing a baby to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk or formula may harm the child's dental health.
The American Dental Association has stated tooth decay is "the single most common chronic childhood disease" and suggests parents schedule a dental checkup by a child's first birthday.
