Five simple tips to strong teeth and dental health Having pearly white teeth is a great way to get some positive attention, but having strong teeth is also important. Dr. Michael Kraus offers some tips for dental health.

Kraus, a New York City dentist who's appeared on numerous television and radio programs, says that one of the most important things is having a balanced diet which includes calcium, which helps strengthen teeth and vitamin C for healthy gums.

He also recommends chewing Trident Xtra Care, which has twice as much calcium as other sugar-free gums. What makes this more important than traditional forms of calcium like milk is that the calcium in gum gets absorbed directly into the tooth enamel rather than into the blood stream, Kraus told Phoenix's ABC affiliate KNXV.

Of course brushing is necessary to maintain dental health, but Kraus recommends using an electric toothbrush which can get into crevices and clean better with its pulsing vibration.

And while many people don't like to do it, Kraus says flossing is necessary to not only promote dental health, but for heart health. The same bacteria found on gums has also been linked to heart disease.

Over-the-counter dental care products like rinses and mouth wash can also enhance flossing and brushing by preventing tooth decay and cavities.
