Students from San Francisco's Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry recently got the opportunity to hone their dental skills while doing a good deed.
Bearing in mind that most people sleeping on the streets do not get the opportunity to maintain good oral health or visit a dentist, the faculty and students paid a visit to Project Homeless Connect and offered free dental services to whoever needed them.
During their visit the student dentists screened 50 homeless clients and performed oral surgery on 17, mostly tooth extractions, the Examiner reports.
Tayla Klien, spokesperson for the dental school, told the news provider: "For a lot of them, it's been years since they've been to a dentist I had one client who pulled three of his own teeth."
"One of the misconceptions is that dental care is optional, but it can lead to other health problems," she added.
Apparently, the students and staff from the school regularly collaborate with Project Homeless Connect to offer clients access to dental treatment that would otherwise not be available to them, while improving their own skills in both dentistry and dealing with patients.
Last month, the Marion Daily Republican reported that dental hygiene students at John A Logan College were performing a similar service for the home people of southern Illinois homeless persons.
