Smoking can 'seriously affect' dental health
Updated: 4/7/2008 2:00:40 PM

Smoking can substantially increase the risk of oral diseases, a dentist has warned.

Dr Jim Arnold, writing in the Northwest Indiana and Illinois Times, warned that the use of tobacco products "substantially" increases the risk of periodontal disease, one of the leading causes of tooth loss in America.

In addition, smokers could potentially be raising their chances of gum recession, staining and tartar build-up and bad breath.

Oral cancer is also a concern for those enjoying cigarettes, pipes or cigars, which can be fatal. Dr Arnold recommended that smokers see their dentist regularly to be screened for oral cancer, as it can go undetected without frequent examinations.

He cautioned that smoking within the first 72 hours of having a tooth removed can lead to infection, which could be "extremely painful".

Americans are also being warned of the dangers of fizzy drinks, particularly energy drinks, which are hugely popular among young people but can be detrimental to dental health.
