Massage your teeth for added protection

Ideally, people would be brushing their teeth after every meal to remove all leftover food particles to boost dental health and prevent tooth decay. However, not everyone has the time to do this, and few people carry toothbrushes around with them wherever they go.

According to researchers from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, simply massaging some toothpaste on teeth after a meal may be the key to fighting tooth decay.

The scientists found that people who used their fingers to massage a high-fluoride toothpaste on their teeth after a meal had enhanced protection against dental problems. According to researcher Anna Nordstrom, D.D.S., Ph.D., the "massage" method seems to be as effective as a third brushing for increasing the amount of fluoride protection a person's teeth get.

"Rubbing the front of your teeth with toothpaste can be an easy way of giving your teeth a third 'shot' of fluoride during the day, after lunch for example. But this should not replace brushing with a fluoride toothpaste morning and evening – it's an extra," concluded Nordstrom.
