Dentists from one Michigan practice recently told WDIV Detroit that more adults are seeking braces to help improve the appearance of their smiles. The professionals said they believe that new dental advancements that allow for less time-consuming straightening treatments encourage older individuals to correct their misaligned teeth.
Many oral care providers are using robotic technology to expedite the process of providing braces.
"Three or four years ago, we were typically treating in about 18 to 24 months, and now treatment time is about nine to 12 months for the majority of our patients," orthodontist Scott Tyler told the news provider.
Tyler and his colleagues explained to the news source that computer imaging allows professionals to move a patient's teeth on a computer screen and witness how the alterations will potentially change the individual's smile. The robots also automatically bend the wires of braces to create an optimal treatment device, according to the news provider.
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, more than one million adults receive orthodontic treatment annually, which accounts for 20 percent of the patient population. The organization adds that upwards of four million children also undergo these types of procedures.
