Community water supplies that have been fluoridated for over 65 years are meant to help reduce tooth decay among U.S. citizens. Now, individuals can purchase bottled water that also contains optimal amounts of fluoride.
A new fluoridated bottled water product, called AquaForte, was created by a New York prosthodontist and is endorsed by the American Dental Association.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), community water supplies that contain fluoride provide benefits to individuals who may not be able to afford dental care.
Fluoride helps to remineralize teeth that have been affected by acid-producing bacteria in the mouth and may also reduce the number of cavities caused by decay.
The CDC reports that public water fluoridation is safe, cost effective and can reduce tooth decay by about 25 percent over the course of a person's life.
Although more than 195 million people nationwide have access to community water supplies that contain fluoride, nearly 100 million citizens do not, the CDC states.
A number of other products, including mouthwash, toothpaste and professional treatments can provide fluoride to individuals who seek to reduce tooth decay.
