As part of February's National Children's Dental Health month, the Michigan Dental Association issued a statement on how to handle common children's dental emergencies.
The Michigan Dental Association (MDA), founded in 1856, includes more than 5,500 members, 26 dental societies, and two dental schools. Michigan dentists will travel throughout the state in the month of February, educating the public on dental health.
Among the common dental health emergencies involving children, a knocked-out tooth should be held by the crown, rinsed in water, and should not be scrubbed, according to the MDA. Time sensitivity is important in saving a tooth and the MDA recommends seeing a dentist immediately, while storing the knocked-out tooth in a cup of milk during transit.
Similarly, a dentist should be consulted for persistent toothaches, broken teeth, tongue or lip bites, and possible broken jaws.
This year marks the 62nd annual National Children's Dental Health Month, sponsored by the American Dental Association. The campaign's slogan is "A Healthy Smile? It's Easy to Find! Remember to Brush and Floss Every Day!" - according to the ADA's website.
