While dental health is linked to a diabetics overall bill of health, some individuals who have this disease still neglect their dental hygiene. In fact, a new study indicates that approximately 66 percent of diabetics have not improved their oral care habits since they were first diagnosed with this illness.
The scientists from dLife along with Soundview Research suggest that diabetics have unstable blood glucose levels and are at a greater risk for developing serious problems due to poor dental health. Charles W. Martin, one of the study's investigators, said that "your dental health absolutely affects the control of your diabetes."
The scientists surveyed 800 diabetics on their knowledge of proper dental health. Approximately 60 percent of these individuals reported flossing or rinsing less than once per day and 62 percent believed that gingivitis does not affect their blood sugar levels.
Overall, diabetics are more likely to experience tooth decay problems, bone or tooth loss as well as dry mouth compared to those who do not have this disease, the experts suggest.
