The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced its plans to hold a conference in December that will discuss the risk of using dental amalgam, a metal mixture that is used to fix tooth defects. In particular, this product is most commonly used for fillings, and contains liquid mercury, silver, tin and copper.
The concerns that will be up for discussion include the dangers of exposing children to dental amalgam, the accuracy of studies conducted on the product and the effects of the mercury in dental amalgam. Also, the panel of experts will explain the assessment process used by the FDA to decide how to regulate the use dental amalgam and its ingredients.
Furthermore, FDA representatives will inform attendees about the potential complications that could be dangerous to pregnant women and their infants.
Last year, the national organization began addressing these health issue, and published the Class II Specials Controls Guidance Document: Dental Amalgam, Mercury and Amalgam Alloy, which addressed how to start controlling the use of this product.
