Dentist: Recession causes more people to go without dental insurance

Dentist: Recession causes more people to go without dental insurance As the unemployment rate in the U.S. fails to lessen, some people are still living without access to dental insurance, which is potentially doing serious harm to their dental health.

One dentist from North Carolina told Ashville's Citizen Times that the general public's need for dental care has continued during the recession.

"Since I've been a dentist, there has always been a need," Dr Perry Stamatiades said. "People don't have insurance or they have no means to pay for dental care."

Stamatiades, who is in the local dental society, added that the need for dental care will only grow.

To combat that need, some nonprofit organizations and clinics have offered temporary, free or discounted dental care to those with no access to a dentist. However, these sporadic events may not be the best alternative.

"I don't have dental insurance, and I'm not working right now," Darnell Pulley told the news provider. "It would cost a fortune."

Families who are searching for ways to save money on dental care may want to consider discount dental plans. These plans, an alternative to dental insurance, offer discounts of 10 to 60 percent on most dental procedures.
