In an effort to help those who may not have access to dental insurance or coverage, the Ohio Air National Guard provided dental care services some Hawaiian residents recently.
A total of 34 Guard members, which included dentists and nurses, treated patients around the state in places like Waimanalo, Kalihi and Hale'iwa, the MansfieldJournal.com reports.
At the Waimanalo Health Center, the service members set up a temporary dental health clinic and provided dental checkups, teeth cleanings and at least one root canal.
Though it was good that some people received much-needed dental care, it still speaks volumes about the need to practice good dental health to lessen a person's chance of getting an oral disease.
Poor dental care can lead to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, eye health, stroke and acid reflux in children. Many health experts have called upon Congress to pass a health care reform plan that includes dental coverage for all U.S. residents.
The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day, flossing daily, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly to maintain optimal dental health.
