Though children across the country are receiving free dental care at various clinics in celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month, a new study has revealed a sobering fact and suggests more work may need to be done concerning dental insurance coverage in this country.
According to the S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, approximately 12 million children experience various barriers that keep them from getting much-needed dental care.
These barriers include lack of insurance coverage, cost of care and difficulty in finding providers that accept certain dental insurance.
The poll also found 57 percent of parents saying their child began going to the dentist at the age of 3. According to the American Dental Association, a child's first dentist appointment should happen before their first birthday.
"When we looked at factors associated with not getting regular dental care one factor that leapt out at us was being uninsured for dental care. We found that while overall, 18 percent of all kids did not get regular dental care, for children without coverage, over 40 percent did not get regular dental care," Dr Matthew Davis, director of the poll, said.
