A new kind of toothpaste is gaining popularity in Florida thanks to assertions that it has greatly improved the dental health of the people using it.
Neem, made with an extract from the Neem tree which mainly grows in India, has been the latest trend in dental care with people saying the toothpaste improved their gum problems, WinkNews.com reports.
"Personally, it has made a big difference in our lives," Leslie Liebermann told the news provider. "I would go in every three to four months [to the dentist] and get my teeth cleaned, and nothing I did made any difference."
The oil from the Neem tree has reportedly been used in various products including insecticides to cosmetics. In India, people take the twigs off the tree and use them as toothbrushes, according to the website.
"Reportedly there are very few instances of tooth decay there," Dr Martin Price, Senior Agricultural Scientist at Echo in North Fort Myers, told WinkNews.com.
However, not everyone is convinced. Dr Mark Kraver, a dentist at Cape Dental Care, said the toothpaste hasn't been approved by the FDA and that it was more likely the diet in India accounted for the good dental health of its population, rather than the oil from a tree.
