Bottled water 'not always best for dental health'
Updated: 11/10/2008 11:30:27 PM

Bottled water Although bottled water is a common choice for families who - for one reason or another - prefer not to drink tap water, the American Dental Association has warned that this decision may affect children's dental health.

The ADA supports the fluoridation of community drinking water to ensure that kids are exposed to an optimum level of fluoride to protect their dental health and prevent tooth decay.

However, the group points out that many bottled water on the market do not contain sufficient levels of fluoride - between 0.7 and 1.2 parts per million - to provide adequate protection.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tap water fluoridation reduces the incidence of tooth decay by between 20 percent and 40 percent.

The Nemours Foundation recommends that parents who are concerned about their child's fluoride intake should consult their dentist to find out if the local water supply is helping protect their dental health.

Meanwhile, some bottled waters do contain lower levels of fluoride - and the product's manufacturer is required to note this amount on the label, the foundation adds.
