Dental hygiene doesn't have to go downhill after Halloween
Updated: 11/7/2008 2:00:34 PM

Dental hygiene doesn Days after Halloween, kids across the country may still be hoarding the spoils of a night of trick-or-treating, choosing to savor their candy over a period of time rather than gorge all at once. Surprisingly, dentists agree with that technique to protect dental health.

Although some parents take away their children's Halloween candy and span out their treats, other parents would rather the kids eat it all at once. According to Vicki Verkley, a dental hygientist at Kori and Everhart DDS in Middletown, Ohio, that's a bad idea.

"We tell parents to limit it to a snack or two a day and then brush their teeth afterward," Verkley told the Oxford Press. "Nutritionally, it's not good to eat a bunch of junk because it totally coats their teeth with sugar."

But some in the dental health industry would rather children not eat the pounds of candy they brought home on Halloween.

The American Association of Orthodontists expects to collect more than 16 tons of candy across the U.S. as part of their candy buy-back program. The program exchanges candy for more tooth friendly alternatives like movie tickets or even cash.

But rather than going to waste, the candy is donated to charities or sent to troops stationed overseas.
