Protect kids' dental health post-Halloween
Updated: 11/3/2008 4:00:34 PM

Protect kids If your children's dental care routine is near-perfect for most of the year, there may not be any harm in allowing them to enjoy their candy after Halloween, an article on CNN.com suggests.

However, it does point out that the frequency with which kids indulge in sugary sweets can make a big difference to how much harm is done to dental health.

Many dentists say that instead of spacing out candy over the course of the day, it may actually be better to encourage children to eat a lot in one sitting, according to Dr Clarice Law of the University of California-Los Angeles School of Dentistry.

She explained to the news provider that acid from candy attacks the surfaces of teeth, so if children eat a lot at once, they are only exposing their dental health to one attack.

However, if they eat one piece every hour, the acid will continue to attack their teeth throughout the day, resulting in more potential damage.

"The key message is that the longer the sugar stays on the teeth, the more damaging it is to the teeth," Dr Joel Berg of the University of Washington School of Dentistry confirmed.

Some dental experts have also raised concerns about the large amount of acid found in popular sour candies. Many advise kids steer clear of these altogether.
