Parents and dentists may sometimes fear that children will take any opportunity to gorge themselves on candy, but the reality is that they also enjoy snacks that are good for their dental health, experts claim.
The Washington State Dental Association reports that when given the opportunity to choose a treat, kids who visited their booth during a recent Green Halloween Festival in Issaquah did not select badly.
A number of items were on offer at the booth, including raw vegetables, cheese, healthy snack bars, seashells, shiny rocks and apples.
"We were delighted and surprised when children, given the choice of healthy versus candy treats, overwhelmingly chose pre-packaged carrots or trail mix, string cheese, yogurt sticks and cheese/cracker snacks," commented volunteer Kimberly Santiago.
Sandy Hardymon of the Washington State Dental Association added that this behavior occurred "without coaching from a parent."
Dental experts recommend that kids eat a well-balanced diet for optimum dental health. The Academy of General Dentistry also reminds parents that starchy snacks high in carbohydrates can be just as damaging to dental health as sugary foods.
