Warning about stress' effect on dental health
Updated: 10/29/2008 4:00:25 PM

Warning about stress Stress as a result of worry about the country's current economic and political situations may be having an adverse effect on aspects of people's dental health, it has been suggested.

Holistic Technologies has raised concerns about the possibility that the credit crunch and the election have been increasing the prevalence of teeth grinding, otherwise known as bruxism.

Lee Weinstein, CEO of the company, said that its sales of a product known as SleepGuard have risen over the past couple of months.

SleepGuard is a biofeedback headband that claims to help people rid themselves of the habit of clenching and grinding their teeth as they sleep.

"We were surprised to find that SleepGuard sales have increased 50 percent over the past two months," commented Weinstein. "We found that the trend is largely based on increased anxiety about the economy, as well as the pending presidential election."

Symptoms of teeth grinding include a headache and a sore jaw. Long term grinding may damage teeth.

To reduce stress, the American Dental Association recommends undergoing physical therapy, taking muscle relaxants, exercising regularly or speaking with someone about your problems.
