Braces 'serve cosmetic and practical functions'
Updated: 8/19/2008 2:00:22 PM

An increasing number of adults are choosing to have braces on their teeth, for both cosmetic and dental health reasons, according to reports.

Orthodontist Tim Wilson told the Herald-Mail that around three-quarters of his adult patients are most concerned with perfecting their smile, while the remaining 25 percent are correcting an underlying orthodontic problem.

Patient Marti Grahl, 42, described how braces helped correct a congenital jawbone defect, allowing her to bite and chew food correctly for the first time.

"I'd bite into a sandwich and take a clean bite," she told the publication, explaining that she had previously had problems chewing particular foods.

Wilson said that the amount of time his adult patients wear braces is usually 25 to 30 percent longer than adolescents because "teeth move a little slower" when people get older.

Recently, orthodontist Bruce Burns told the Winston-Salem Journal that more adults who had braces as teens are getting them again later in life because their teeth have moved.
