New research has found that dental implants cause little or no bone loss and are typically 98 percent successful.
The study, published in the Journal of Oral Implantology, looked at 60 patients in Israel and Germany who have received a total of 267 implants.
It found that 98.5 percent of the implants were successful and there was no apparent bone loss in 99 percent of the patients, after an average period of 7.5 years.
Dr Jamie Lozada, president of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, stated that this research helps to confirm the growing belief that dental implants are the best way to replace missing or compromised teeth.
"With an estimated two of three Americans having at least one missing tooth, implants are becoming the preferred tooth-replacement option. Implant surgery is one of the safest, most precise and predictable procedures in dentistry," he said.
Until now, dentures have been the most popular treatment for people who have lost their teeth. However, because the teeth are not actually replaced the jaw bone deteriorates, which can cause a range of other dental health problems.
