Oral health specialists Molar have come up with eight reasons why cleaning between your teeth can help people avoid "dental woes".
Two things everyone wants to avoid are bad breath and stained teeth. The former is often caused by food and plaque left between teeth which begins to stagnate and smell, but which can easily be removed with a good once-over with a brush.
Meanwhile items like coffee, red wine, blue cheese and cigarettes can give teeth a dirty and stained appearance - but it is just the plaque that is on the teeth that initially becomes stained, which again can be cleaned off by brushing.
Not brushing between teeth can also have more serious consequences, including tooth decay, inter-dental inflammation and bleeding gums, the organisation warns.
In addition, gum disease, which has been linked to heart disease and a host of other serious illnesses, can be caused by continued plaque build-up between the teeth.
Gum disease is one of the most common health problems in America and has been linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, strokes and pneumonia.
Molar's final reason for cleaning between teeth is: "Inter-dental cleaning is so easy. Inter-dental brushes are simple to use and effective on the majority of tooth spaces, especially at the back of the mouth."
