Lubbock residents have 'worst teeth in US'
Updated: 3/14/2008 4:05:30 PM

A new survey has found that people in Lubbock, west Texas, have the worst teeth in the US.

In a study of 100 large cities, Lubbock came bottom of the dental care league, with El Paso and San Antonio not faring much better.

Conversely, the research by Men's Health magazine found that the best teeth owners resided in Madison (Wisconsin), Nashville (Tennessee) and Raleigh (North Carolina).

Some dentists in Lubbock have their own theories as to why they have the poorest oral health.

"For years, we've had such high fluoride levels," Randell Johnson, a local dentist, told the Avalanche Journal. "It's the local well water that's so bad."

A high level of fluoride in water is known to cause the enamel on teeth to become rough, leaving brown or white stains.

Researchers based their results on statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

They analysed data which showed how many people in the area visit their dentist annually, how many cancel their appointments, how many floss on a regular basis and the number of households which use fluoride.

The survey highlights the importance of making regular trips to the dentist.
