When people have trouble accessing affordable dental care, they may experience a number of serious oral health issues. For example, a recent article published in the Delvara Times newspaper told the story of Patty Brasure, a woman who said that she had never been able to afford a trip to the dentist, so she never went.
According to the news source, years of poor dental hygiene left Brasure with only a few remaining teeth, since the rest had fallen out or she had been forced to pull them out herself. The Delvara Times spoke to Frank McLaughlin, executive director of the Maryland State Dental Association, who works to provide care to people who can't afford it.
"Even when they're filling out the final papers to leave, they're thanking us for taking care of them with mouthfuls of gauze. They say, 'I just wish I never had let it go this long,'" McLaughlin told the Delvara Times.
Rather than struggling without dental insurance, individuals should look into discount dental plans to help them gain access to care. According to Forbes magazine, these plans can help people gain access to a number of dentists for only about $100 a year and may be a better alternative to insurance.
