Parents in East Tennessee who don't have dental insurance should consider investing in discount dental plans to make sure their kids get the care they need. According to a report by WATE, dentists in the area are saying that tooth decay among local children is at epidemic proportions.
The news source spoke to Richard Myers, D.D.S., who not only cares for children at his dental practice, but also works at a local hospital a few days a week where he sees children who have emergent dental problems.
Unfortunately, Tennessee isn't the only part of the country where people are heading to the emergency room with dental problems. USA Today reported that government research discovered many people across the U.S. are going to the emergency room for dental care, and that this option often costs 10 times more than preventative care.
"It's really tough to say this, but sometimes we feel we're pounding our heads against a wall," Myers told WATE. "We see a lot of children who never get their teeth brushed and if they do, not correctly, a lot of them."
He said that while it's fine for kids to have a soda with their dinner every now and then, but moderation is key.
