An estimated 130 million Americans do not have dental insurance and may be struggling to gain access to affordable dental care, according to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging. People who live in rural areas are particularly affected by this dental care crisis, since few dentists choose to practice in these parts of the country. Recently, WEKU, a Kentucy news source, published an article detailing how difficult it can be for some residents of the state to receive dental care.
According to the information provider, the federal government counts 4,503 mostly rural regions of America where more than 3,000 people share one dentist. The news source spoke to dentist Nikki Stone, who explained how poor the dental health of children in her rural Kentucky community was when she began working there.
"Large numbers of the kids had never seen a dentist. Half had untreated tooth decay, and nearly 20 percent had urgent needs - more than six cavities or an active abscess. I felt like I was standing here on the line of the fire with a squirt gun," said Stone, quoted by the news source.
No one should have to go without dental care just because they do not have insurance. Individuals should look into discount dental plans to help them get the care they need at a fraction of the cost.
