Parents struggle to provide oral care to children  

February is National Children's Dental Health Month, so there have been a lot of stories detailing the struggle that many kids have in gaining  access to oral care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 45 million U.S. residents do not have dental insurance, and if parents do not have insurance than many children do not have the opportunity to visit the dentist.

Recently, The Reading Eagle reported on how children are being affected by a lack of access to oral care. According to the news source, not only are many children unable to visit a dentist, but also many parents do not understand the proper way to care for their child's teeth.

"There's a lot of need, because a lot of these underserved kids don't have a dental home. Some have never learned anything about taking care of their teeth, and they develop serious problems at a very young age," said dental hygienist Mary Rugh, quoted by the news source. She added that parents are part of the problem, "There is a lack of understanding about oral health."

The news provider spoke to Valerie S. Deibler, D.D.S., who reminded parents that food and drinks that combine sugar and acid can be particularly damaging to teeth. She said that even if it's 100 percent apple juice, it's high in sugar and acid.
