Don't let these common dental problems get you
Updated: 1/25/2012 7:00:07 PM

Don't let these common dental problems get you Anyone who ignores their oral health is at risk of developing a number of problems. These conditions can be painful, difficult to treat and can end up costing more money than regular brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist would. Recently, Fox News gave its readers a guide to some common dental problems, including who's most susceptible to them and how to avoid complications.

First, the news source discussed tooth decay or cavities. While everyone is at risk of developing a cavity, children and older adults have the highest risk. The best way to avoid this issue is to brush and floss regularly to rid the mouth of plaque.

Next, the news provider mentioned enamel erosion, which is exposure to acid from food and drinks that wears away at the teeth and leaves them rounded and discolored.

"I see people with good home care who are getting cavities,” said Cindi Sherwood, a dentist in Independence, Kansas, quoted by the news source. “A lot of times the only risk factor we can come up with is diet soda."

Fox suggested consuming these beverages only with meals, and using a straw. OralB.com recommends chewing sugar-free gum after drinking acidic beverages, which may promote saliva production that can help teeth recover from the damage caused by these substances.
