Root canal basics for celebrities - and the rest of us  

Tooth decay and other dental health problems can happen to everyone, even celebrities. This became clear on Jan. 17,  when actress Kirstie Alley took to the social networking site Twitter to beg fans for dental advice. According to ContactMusic.com, the star was concerned about an upcoming root canal.

"Good Morning!!!! Who needs a root canal??? I do!! I Do!!... ugh. Hey!! any great dentists on here with advice?? Pros & Cons of root canals... and other solutions?? Love an alternative... Not extraction," tweeted Alley, quoted by the news source.

According to the American Dental Association, a few decades ago, when a person had a tooth with a diseased nerve, they may lose the tooth. Now, thanks to root canal therapy, it is possible to remove the diseased parts of the tooth and then seal it off with a filling to make it stronger.

AboutCosmeticDensitstry.com states that sometimes the infected tissue can be pushed through the ends of the root during the procedure, which can lead to a painful infection. Luckily, this is easily treated, and a person still gets to keep their teeth.
