Dentist discusses sedation for dental phobics  

While many people avoid going to the dentist for economical reasons, some ignore their dental health because they are afraid of the pain associated with a trip to the oral care professional. According to a study conducted by the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, 30 percent of Americans avoid regular trips to the dentist office out of fear.

Recently, New Jersey dentist Jerry Strauss discussed the concept of sedation dentistry for people who are afraid to get their teeth cleaned.

"Sedation techniques allow us to comfortably treat the true dental phobics, those people that have had bad experiences and have anxiety about dental treatment and even the medically compromised. I believe dental sedation is one of the real critical components to success in dentistry," said Strauss.

The most common form of sedation dentistry is intravenous sedation. However, according to Strauss, there are less invasive methods being developed, such as ones that require a patient to inhale a drug rather than having it injected into their system. Patients with a true fear of oral care should speak to their local dentist about sedation options.
