Illiteracy may affect dental health  

There are many things that can impede a person's access to proper oral care. For example, many individuals do not have dental insurance, and cannot afford to pay out of pocket for a trip to the dentist. According to a recent study conducted by the Department of Business in the UK, 5 million British adults have major literacy issues, which may be hurting their oral health.

This is relevant in America as well, since LiveScience states that a 2003 study found that 14 percent of U.S. adults are illiterate.

According to Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Nigel Carter, D.D.S., illiteracy may impact a person's ability to understand dental health information and instructions they have been given to their dentist regarding their oral care.

"Patients are not expected to understand medical jargon and dental professionals must consider carefully how effective their communication is verbally, online and in print," said Carter, quoted by Health Canal.

This suggests that dentists should take the time to make sure that their patients understand exactly what they need to do to maintain dental health.
