German researchers create new material for dentures

Glass chemists from Jena University have designed a new type of glass ceramic with a nanocrystalline structure that they believe can be used to make better dentures.  

There have been many advancements made in dental care throughout the years, particularly when it comes to dentures. Once made out of wood, there is now a wide variety of dentures for patients to choose from that will allow people who have lost their teeth due to tooth decay or aging to keep on chewing. Now, researchers from Germany have created a new kind of denture that may be added to the list of oral health advances.

Glass chemists from Jena University have designed a new type of glass ceramic with a nanocrystalline structure that they believe can be used to make better dentures.

"We achieve a strength five times higher than with comparable denture ceramics available today," said researcher Christian Russel, M.D., Ph.D. "In combination with new optical characteristics an additional field of application is opening up for these materials in dentistry."

Researchers believe that these materials will not only create stronger dentures, but also ones that look remarkably like natural teeth. More study is needed before this product will be made available to the public, but the scientists remain confident that individuals will soon see these materials as a staple of modern dentistry.
