Things pregnant women should know about oral care

Maintaining good oral care is important, especially for pregnant women. Maintaining good oral care is important, especially for pregnant women. Recently, the La Jolla Light ran an article explaining that while many women understand that smoking and drinking alcohol can harm their unborn child, periodontal infection may lead to pregnancy complications as well.

In response to this, the news source offered some tips for pregnant women who are concerned about their dental health.

"Upon becoming pregnant, women should discuss oral health care options and priorities with both their prenatal and dental health care providers," according to the news source.

The Light added that the time period between the 14th and 20th week is ideal for a dental health appointment, because it falls in the middle of the first and third trimesters, a key period in fetal development.

The American Dental Association reports that a baby's teeth begin to come between the third and six months of pregnancy. During this time, the organization suggests eating plenty of calcium and protein to help give infant's teeth the nutrients they need.
