Researchers found that the teeth of premature children are up to 10 percent smaller than those of kids that were carried full-term.

While everyone should maintain proper dental health to avoid problems, some populations may be more susceptible to oral care issues than others. For example, researchers from Sweden have recently found that people who were born premature have smaller teeth, and a greater need for orthodontic adjustments.

"When we examined the children we also saw that their teeth were farther apart," said researcher Liselotte Paulsson-Björnsson. She also stressed that this is not a major health problem, but could be an aesthetic one, and something that can be easily fixed by something such as braces or other dental procedures.

Researchers found that the teeth of premature children are up to 10 percent smaller than those of kids that were carried full-term. They examined the first permanent teeth that the kids had, which reportedly come in between the ages of 8 and 10.

The scientists plan to continue studying the children used in this study as they enter their teenage years, to see if as the rest of their adult teeth come in they are a smaller size as well.
