Majority of American toddlers have never been to the dentist

A recent study conducted by the University of Michigan has found that most children between the ages of 1 and 2 have no received dental care, even though experts recommend that a child visits the dentist by age 1. Proper oral health should begin at a young age so that it can continue throughout a person's entire life. A recent study conducted by the University of Michigan has found that most children between the ages of 1 and 2 have no received dental care, even though experts recommend that a child visits the dentist by age 1. 

The national survey found that only 23 percent of 1-year-olds and 44 percent of 2-year-olds have been to see a dental professional.

"Dental problems such as early childhood caries (cavities in the baby teeth) are the leading cause of chronic disease for young children," says Sarah Clark, M.P.H., associate director of the Child Health Evaluation and Research (CHEAR).

Clark added that most dental issues a child this young will encounter can easily be fixed by a dentist. Nearly half of parents surveyed said that when they took their child to their healthcare professional, there was no mention of oral care.

These results suggest that there needs to be an increase not only in parents taking their child to the dentist, but also in general physicians speaking to individuals about the importance of paying attention to their child's oral health.
