Pet care should include looking out for the oral health of furry friends

Dental care is important to the whole family, and that includes pets. Dental care is important to the whole family, and that includes pets. Every dog owner values the health of their pet, but many people forget to pay proper attention to their dogs' teeth. Since October is Dental Hygiene Awareness month, individuals can also take this time to consider the importance of keeping up with their pet's oral care.

“If your pet’s oral hygiene is not taken care of, it has the potential to cause serious health problems such as periodontal disease, loss of teeth, and in a worst case scenario, kidney, liver and even heart disease. Our objective is to call attention to this problem because it’s so easily solved," said Mike Metz, veterinarian at Companion Animal Hospital of Wakefield.

Metz said that pet dental care can be handled regularly at home, and a local veterinarian can teach individuals how to check for signs of potential issues. Things to look for include swollen gums, bad breath and pain or bleeding when the gums are touched.

The veterinarian also recommended hard kibble over soft foods, because it has been shown to do more to clean pets' teeth.
