Gum disease may cause stroke

The findings have lead dentists to urge people to take the time to examine their teeth and make an appointment with their oral health professional. Many people do not pay enough attention to their dental health. Often, individuals mistakenly believe that oral problems cannot lead to more serious complications. Now, recent research has shown how important it is to make regular visits to the dentist. A study presented at the 89th International Association for Dental Research General Session and Exhibition in San Diego has found that gum disease is more likely to cause a stroke than diabetes. 

The research suggested that gum problems are actually twice as likely to cause the cardiovascular event than the blood sugar disorder. The findings have lead dentists to urge people to take the time to examine their teeth and make an appointment with their oral health professional.

Spending a few minutes each day brushing and flossing can help to prevent oral health diseases and the benefits could be far-reaching, as individuals may also be reducing their risk of developing serious, life-threatening conditions," said a statement on CosmeticDentistry.com.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that preganat women also carry a risk of gum issues, as pregnancy hormones can make the gums more sensitive. 

This study highlights the importance of having access to proper dental care, which can be obtained through regular trips to the dentist.
