Dental health care is a low priority among economically disadvantaged Pennsylvania families Those who are going through financially trying times often find it easy to neglect certain expenses that are deemed non-essential. In York County and Adams County in Pennsylvania, proper dental health care is being considered a monetary burden to avoid by many low income residents, according to the York Dispatch.

The news source reports that a certain level of desperation regarding the need for oral health care has led to drastic and dangerous practices among area residents lacking the money to pay for it.

Most commonly, dental check-ups are simply put off for too long in this part of Pennsylvania. Patients with dental health issues that could be easily corrected with expediently sought care are often declining to receive it, which leads to extreme decay and rotting in the teeth, as well as infections that sometimes spread to other parts of the body.

In some cases, dentists have seen residents attempting to take oral health into their own hands - surfing the internet to learn how to repair chipped teeth or apply cavity fillings on their own, and almost invariably failing.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research states that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have an average of 3.28 teeth that are severely decayed or missing.
